Drawing on African mythology, McCraney spins a web of yearning and desire that embraces the intimate complexities of the contemporary African-American experience. IN THE RED AND BROWN WATER is a coming-of-age story of Oya, a talented teenage athlete navigating her transition to womanhood. THE BROTHERS SIZE examines the real and imaginary elements that confine brothers Oshoosi and Ogun. In the final play, MARCUS; OR THE SECRET OF SWEET, young Marcus, misunderstood by his friends and family, must come to terms with his history, his sexuality, and his future. At once both poetically mythic and emotionally grounded, McCraney's theatrical voice is utterly sublime, unique and deeply powerful.
